Contaminants in Your HVAC System

There are many substances that can be classified as a contaminant. Any unwanted substance in your HVAC system can have a negative health consequence. Contaminants can be organic or inorganic, airborne, biological, or a member of the fungi plant group.

Common dust in a HVAC system can lead to the development of biological contamination. The air handling system can act as a source of bioaerosols – airborne particles of biological origin, aerosols – solid or liquid airborne particles, or biological contaminants – bacteria, fungi, and viruses, by providing a growth-friendly environment, which is then distributed in the air you breathe. Even though there are low levels of fungi and bacteria existing outdoors, indoor contamination can be effectively controlled by minimizing available nutrient sources (dust, dirt, and debris) and regulating moisture levels within the air handling system.

Biological contaminants-bacteria, fungi (mold and mildew), viruses, mites, pollen, and animal dander can cause discoloration on registers and diffusers. These biological contaminants can also lead to asthmatic reactions or allergic reactions to susceptible individuals.
